The Law Beneath Collapse
There’s a pattern that only becomes visible when you stop looking at problems one by one.
Burnout.
Market crashes.
Institutional failure.
Loss of meaning after success.
Language losing coherence.
Ecosystems tipping suddenly.
They look unrelated. They aren’t.
They are all expressions of the same underlying error.
The assumption we never question
We assume that if something is good, then more of it must be better.
More efficiency.
More speed.
More optimisation.
More utilisation.
More output.
And we assume that anything unused is waste.
This assumption feels obvious.
It is also deeply wrong.

Local optimisation cannot see thresholds.
It cannot feel how close a system is to irreversibility.
It only sees short-term gains.
So slack gets consumed — because slack looks idle.
Nature learned this first
Biology is full of what looks like waste:
two kidneys
genetic redundancy
inefficient metabolism
excess neurons
sexual reproduction instead of cloning
From an efficiency lens, this makes no sense.
From a persistence lens, it’s inevitable.
Evolution doesn’t optimise for performance.
It optimises for survival under unknown future conditions.
Slack is insurance against futures you can’t predict.
Remove it, and extinction follows — not immediately, but inevitably.
Humans keep unlearning the lesson
Modern systems pride themselves on:
just-in-time supply chains
lean organisations
full utilisation
constant engagement
They feel powerful.
They are also fragile.
They mistake calm for stability.
They mistake speed for progress.
They mistake efficiency for intelligence.
And because slack feels lazy, wasteful, or indulgent, it gets eliminated first.
Until reality reasserts itself.
Why meaning collapses under success
This law isn’t abstract. It’s personal.
People often don’t lose meaning when they fail.
They lose it when they succeed.
Success removes slack:
fewer alternative futures
higher stakes
locked identities
constant performance
Optimisation replaces exploration.
Metrics replace values.
Output replaces purpose.
Meaning requires unused potential.
When all capacity is consumed, meaning has nowhere to live.
Why play, boredom, humour, and ritual matter
These aren’t cultural luxuries.
They are buffer mechanisms.
Play allows exploration without irreversible commitment.
Boredom restores capacity after overload.
Humour introduces truth without forcing identity collapse.
Ritual slows transitions so systems don’t tear themselves apart.
Every culture that lasted discovered these — independently.
Not because of belief.
Because cultures that didn’t, didn’t last.
Even physics agrees
At the deepest levels, reality itself is structured around slack:
energy gaps
uncertainty
irreversibility
horizons
thresholds
A universe with no margins cannot form structure.
A system with no restraint cannot have an interior.
A process with no irreversibility cannot have history.
Existence itself depends on what is not used.
The law, stated plainly
Strip everything else away, and what remains is simple:
Any system that consumes all of its capacity destroys the conditions that allow it to exist as a system.
Burnout, collapse, and loss of meaning aren’t mysterious.
They’re downstream effects.
The uncomfortable conclusion
We don’t need more optimisation.
We don’t need more acceleration.
We don’t need more utilisation.
We need:
margins that aren’t justified
slack that isn’t explained
limits that aren’t optimised away
