The Read Is Not Reality
What I can offer at the scale of one member
I am a father, husband, designer, musician, human. These are reads formed through relation. Each makes some part of me available. None contains the whole person.
This piece is about what happens when a read hardens into the thing it describes.
In 2024 I had a transient ischaemic attack while packing a van. My arm went numb. One side of my mouth felt strange. I could think clearly, but I could not speak or type.
The cognition was intact. The transmission was not.
For the first time, I felt the gap between what is present and what can be carried outward. The thought was whole to me. I could not carry it into a form my brother-in-law could read.
That concerned me.
I recovered, but the gap stayed with me. I began to watch for it everywhere.
In architecture, the gap is physical and delayed.
I have stood on sites where something I drew did not work. The correction was not a matter of opinion. The building taught me what my read had failed to carry.
A drawing is not the building. It needs to carry enough of the right relations for another person to act, and enough of the path for them to trace back when something fails.
When I do the work well, I narrow a complex field until another person can read it and continue. I gather more conditions than any drawing can hold. I ask what the next responsible move requires, resolve and bound that information, and preserve enough of the dependency path for someone else to recover what the drawing depends on.
Missed dimensions do not align. Loads fail to transfer. Junctions leak. Construction stops. The read is corrected by reality.
Consider a floor joist.
It does not carry independently. Its behaviour depends on what loads it, what supports and restrains it, how it is connected, and where the load continues. We isolate it to calculate it, but the isolation is an instrument. A calculation can be internally correct and still fail to describe the building.
The question is not whether the member carries. It is how the member participates in the load path.
“Floor joist” names a role. The timber was grown, milled, graded, cut, positioned and loaded. In another placement, the same timber may act as a trimmer, a beam, or part of a system resisting wind. The label makes one relation readable. It does not become the whole member.
A name is a read. A read can harden.
I see the same operation in music.
I play drums. I have played both acoustic and electric kits, and I have used music software to lay out, loop and rearrange beats. What stayed with me across all of them was how much the feel could change while the count remained the same.
Some beats sit squarely on the pulse. Others swing. Some push ahead; some hang back. The pattern may remain recognisable, but small differences in timing, weight and space change how the whole rhythm feels.
The Purdie shuffle made this clear. I could learn where the strokes belonged and still fail to carry the groove. The feel lives in the swing, the ghost notes and the space between hits. The beat was readable before the feel became available through my hands.
Playing acoustic and electric kits sharpened the distinction. On the electric kits I have played, the pads return a more even and consistent sound. An acoustic kit exposes more of what touch, placement, force, the instrument itself and the room contribute. Two performances can be counted as the same beat while being carried differently.
The count matters. It gives another musician a way into the pattern, a way to repeat it and continue. But the count does not become the groove. It makes the rhythm readable without containing everything the rhythm carries.
We do this to people.
A diagnosis, an occupation, an identity — each can provide necessary place. A diagnosis can relieve blame and enable support. An occupation can make responsibility legible. An identity can connect a person to shared history and experience.
The problem is not making a bounded read. Every field must cut in order to think.
The problem is forgetting the cut was made.
A useful label hardens into the person. Attention and responsibility contract around the visible member while the wider relations fall from view. I have felt myself become “the architect” in a conversation and felt the narrowing. I have seen my children read me in ways I did not intend. I have mistaken my explanation for the thing I was explaining.
This discipline is not something I apply only to other people. My own reads harden too.
Working with AI returned me to the van.
There, the thought was whole and the transmission failed. Here, the sentence arrives intact, and I cannot assume understanding beneath it.
AI can reorganise language, find connections and produce coherent explanations. But fluency can appear before the relations beneath it have been tested. An elegant output can feel like understanding when it has been assembled from what is presently available.
The two separations are inversions of each other, and only one announces itself. In the van, the gap was immediate. I could feel where the transmission had come apart. A fluent AI output announces no gap. Nothing in the sentence marks where its dependencies remain untested.
My task has been to test that output against lived experience, professional consequence and other fields. Can I inhabit what it has said? Can I follow the relation through something I know? What remains when the attractive wording is removed?
Human understanding develops through bodily participation, consequence, correction and support. Care responds to what another person can presently receive and carry. AI does not bear what follows from its output in the world as the person who acts on it does. The reckoning remains with the human participant.
The danger is not only that AI may be wrong. It is that a fluent conclusion becomes a place to stand before its dependencies have been made visible.
This is the centre.
A drawing is not the building. A model is not the site. A label is not the person. A concept is not reality. Fluency is not knowledge.
A read is a bounded way of making part of reality available. It is not reality itself.
It is not outside reality either.
Once made, a read enters the relation and changes what happens there. A drawing changes how a carpenter works. A diagnosis changes how a person is met, and how they may come to meet themselves. A job title changes what I feel allowed to say.
A hardened read is not merely inaccurate. It is active. It alters what it claims to describe.
So the question is not only whether a read matches. It is whether it remains answerable to what carries it.
Retrace is the discipline that follows. Where did this read come from? What does it depend on? At what scale does it become readable? What was excluded? Can another participant recover the path? Where does my capacity stop?
Retrace is not doubt. It is not a refusal to stand anywhere or say anything. It is the practice of keeping a read answerable while it carries, so that it does not harden into the thing itself.
It keeps the path back open.
Across the fields available to me, I have not found an independently carrying object.
Every object I can retrace remains a bounded member within relations that form it, support it and continue beyond it. What we call the object is a useful read at a particular scale. I have not found the point where that read becomes independent of relation.
That is where the method repeatedly returns me. It remains my read. It is not reality captured from outside.
Holding a bounded member open to the wider load path within which it became readable — preserving the path back to what carries it — is the discipline I call Reality Mechanics.
The name is not the subject. It names the practice you have already encountered.
I end as one participant.
I am not asking you to adopt a finished system. I am offering the read I can responsibly carry.
I keep finding relation whenever I retrace an object. That is the structure I am confident enough to offer — not a claim that I have captured reality from outside it.
Bring the reads formed in your own relations. Show me where this read holds, where it fails, and what I cannot see from my placement.
You do not need to use my vocabulary. What I need is enough of the path to remain available for us to follow it together.
