Pulse
A thread is recognised only by holding through each return.
I watched an ant on the kitchen bench today.
It had broken away from the others. Its movement looked strange from where I stood. One way, stop, turn, back, gone behind something, out again.
It would be easy to call that wandering.
The longer I watched, the less sure I was.
The ant did not need me to understand what it was doing. It was already doing it.
Some work is like that.
You do not begin with a clear reason. You do not know why it keeps asking for your attention. Often it is inconvenient. There is paid work. There are children. There is a wife. There is ordinary life, rightly asking to be carried.
And still, something keeps returning.
Not as an escape from those things. As a pulse you do not yet know how to explain.
I did not know what I was building. I only knew that when I left it too long, something in me came back. I would follow one part, lose it, return somewhere else, and find it still connected.
Looking back, I was not collecting ideas. I was testing whether a thread was really there.
That is different from a plan. A plan can be explained from the beginning. A thread is recognised only by holding through each return.
Over the last few weeks the work around that thread has changed. It is public enough now that I no longer need to stand in the middle of it. There is a place to enter, a place to inspect, and a way for others — even AI — to read from the same source instead of asking me to explain it again.
That is enough for now.
Not finished. Held enough to leave alone.
If you are curious about the thread, I have gathered it here: Reality Mechanics.
Retrace note, added July 2026.
Builds on: The Map Is Not the Hill

As someone whose brain seems to spend its days following threads rather than plans, this resonated deeply. I finished reading with one of my familiar raised eyebrows not because I disagreed, but because you gave me something else to wonder about. Thank you for sharing this.
Yes i love the difference you made between a thread and a plan.
I feel the exact same thing.
Waiting to read more of your work. 🤩
